BLS takes up various research and studies and uses various scientific tools and techniques to arrive at solutions towards issues related to employment, skill, education, livelihoods, natural resource management and whole of the developmental sector Major objective of the research and studies are

Accomplished Research Assignments

The assignment Participatory Rural Appraisal was carried out for implementing watershed development programme in Namagiripettai block of Namakkal for Watershed Development Agency, Namakkal. The outputs have helped in developing a plan for the implementation of watershed. Along with the PRA, awareness programme was also conducted in the villages on watershed.

Socio economic data collection and impact evaluation of RVP watersheds in Mettur and South Pennaiyar Catchments was carried out. Evaluation was carried out for 37 watersheds with data collection from more than 1200 beneficiaries and also physical verification of works and activities that were implemented under the watershed development programme.

Socio economic data collection and impact evaluation of RVP watersheds in Tirupattur and Salem was carried. Evaluation was carried out for 2 watersheds with data collection from more than 50 beneficiaries and also physical verification of works and activities carried out under the watershed development programme.

Impact assessment of 50 watersheds (DPAP and IWDP) of 2002-05 batch in Tamil Nadu were done along with SkillPro.The assessment focused on assessing the impact of the watershed project on the land use pattern, agriculture, socio economic profile of the beneficiaries, livelihood promotion of beneficiaries etc. The assignment involved conducting FGDs and discussions with beneficiaries at the watershed level for assessing the impact. The physical verification and monitoring of the structures created under the watershed project was done and the usefulness and benefits of the structures was also assessed. 4,250 beneficiaries were covered under the impact assessment study. The study was done for SkillPro Foundation, which had taken the assignment from NIRD.

Vulnerability mapping for disaster in 18 wards of Ponneri was done for Avvai Village Welfare Society and GTZ. The project was funded by European Commission. The exercise has helped in identifying the vulnerable areas and communities and also helped in identifying the immediate needs to address any disaster in those locations both on long term and short term basis.

The assignment focused on to identify the needs for children in Vellakanni block and developed a strategic plan that is to be implemented over 5 years. Further to it BLS is also lending handholding support in assessing the children on the educational competencies and improving their skills in terms of learning, writing and memorizing. Teachers are trained on how to teach and upskill the children. The assignment is done for Bharathi Women Development Centre and is funded by Child Fund

BLS will be conducting a skill gap study for ACC in Wadi, Gulbarga, and Karnataka. The study will identify the aspirations of the youth, both unemployed and under employed and the skill sets they posses and needs. Industries will be studied to understand the human resources they require and the skill sets. Based on the industrial needs and the aspiration of youth, various sectors for skill training will be identified and recommended.

Creation of Youth Shaba to improve education and other social responsibilities of youth in Nagapattinam. The project wasdone in 15 villages covering 620 youth. The project was done for Bharathi Women Devp Centre funded by Child Fund.
